If somebody loses the total Loss of Independent Existence they are unable to carry out typically (depending on the insurance provider) three of the six following activities including walking, lifting, using pens/pencil’s and keyboards, vision, hearing and speech.

The individual must be able to typically unaided by another person but with the use of other aids such as sticks, walk around 100 meters (generally on a flat/level surface) without stopping or suffering sever discomfort from doing this. They must be able to lift a certain weight from waist height and carry it for a certain distance.

They should be able to use some form of writing material or a keyboard with one of their hands or using a provided aid. The individual should also be able to use their hearing, vision and speech senses to a moderately acceptable level and be able to be understood in what they are doing. Loss of independent existence is normally standard on a Critical Illness Insurance policy.
